THE BIRTH OF THE SUN AND THE MOON

Sometimes there are people in our lives who determine it no only as friends but also as inspirers of our artistic search. I met Omar in London back in the ‘70s and from our first encounter we both felt that our relationship was from before…

The same as I, at that time he painted, played and wrote poems. Maybe the first things we did together were to create music for films by painter Rafael Hastings. Funny, at that same time I found myself playing with Susana Baca, who recited poems by Omar and other Peruvian poets.

The merit of this recording is that it was recorded live at the house of Amauta Jose Carlos Mariategui and the feeling that it left on us was that of an invocation to guardian forces. They are fragments of a book by Omar called “THE BIRTH OF THE SUN AND THE MOON”. We recorded it because we noticed that after 30 years or after 3000 years of collaborations this was an imperative need. We were lucky enough to be counseled technically by engineer Frank Cebreros who knew how to capture the magic of unheard things.

Some years ago in downtown Lima at a poetry festival organized by young poets, Omar and I had them listen for the first and only time to this recording. A silence which quality even today resounds in my ears captured the place.

We hope that this poetic synchronism of voice and percussion touch you as we were touched that night.

Mother Earth

for me I spill the first sip of liquor

as well as the honey distilled by dreams

the most tasty concoctions first tubers

the better nourished corn tassels those that can’t stand their weight

the petals of flowers more beautiful than words

dazzling

the most tender the most human those that keep

deep meanings

those others which awaken from sleepiness

Holy Virgin Earth life spring

in honor of it being so always and forever

anchor from water meat of the universe mouth ear

life itself for you my sufferings my pains

those of my people who travel centuries you know how to

encounter their destiny

their precise thought their wise choice their tenacious fact

without decline

The most intense liquors the sweetest I sprinkle for thee

in the four directions

and there where your son the sun is born

and in the name of the moon flower from the sky and night its garden

along the ways of energy

where human may never lose root nor line of

the horizon

and in the air with the sacred leaves of knowledge

your most cherished lenitive daughters

I summon the forces of nature the spirit of

water and clouds

the healing plants the sacred animals

the spirit of ancient humans the innocent

of all times

the beloved dead

those incarcerated by freedom

those who rise over pain

those not yet born Mother Earth

the bird man who soars all sunrises

with your winged chant

bear fruit without harm nor venom

and the enemy rest forever in his den

No land as lavish as yours Mother Earth

you produce the most unexpected saps

you understand

what I say and you listen to my heartbeats at every hour

I but return what one day you gave me

you expect me at the strangest hour and most sharpely

enamored kind Mother Earth take my offering

A veces hay seres en nuestra vida que son determinantes no solamente como amistades sino como inspiradores de nuestras propias búsquedas artísticas. A Omar lo conocí recién llegado de Londres allá por los años 70 y desde nuestro primer encuentro ambos sentimos que nuestra relacion era anterior…
El en ese entonces al igual que yo ya pintaba tocaba y escribía poesía. Quizá los primeros trabajos que hicimos fueron musicalizaciones para películas del pintor Rafael Hastings. Curiosamente en esa época me encontré también tocando con
Susana Baca quien recitaba poemas de Omar y de otros poetas peruanos.
Esta grabación tiene el merito de haber sido grabada en vivo en casa del Amauta José Carlos Mariátegui y el sentimiento que nos dejo a ambos fue como de una invocación a las fuerzas tutelares. Son fragmentos de un libro de Omar titulado ‘EL nacimiento del Sol y de la Luna’. Lo grabamos porque nos dimos cuenta que después de 30 años o después de 3000 años de colaboraciones esto era una
necesidad imperante. Tuvimos la suerte de contar con la asesoría técnica del ingeniero Frank Cebreros, que supo capturar la magia de las cosas inauditas.
Hace algunos años en el centro de Lima en un festival de poesía organizado por jóvenes poetas, Omar y yo les hicimos escuchar por primera y única vez esta grabación. Se dio un silencio de una calidad que aun ahora resuena en nosotros.
Esperamos que este sincronismo poético de voz y percusión, los toque como fuimos nosotros tocados aquella noche.

Madre Tierra
para ti derramo el primer sorbo de licor
y también la miel que destilan los sueños
los potajes más sabrosos los tubérculos primeros
las panojas más nutridas esas que se rinden por su peso
los pétalos de las flores más bellas las palabras
resplandecientes
las más tiernas las más humanas las que guardan
significados profundos
las otras que despiertan del letargo
Santa Tierra Virgen manantial de vida
en aras de que siempre sea así y por siempre
ancla del agua carne del universo boca oído
vida misma para ti mis sufrimientos mis dolores
los de mi pueblo que camina siglos tú sabes coómo por
encontrar su destino
su pensamiento preciso su acierto su hecho tenaz
sin reflujo
Los licores más intensos los más dulces asperjo para ti
a las cuatro direcciones
y allí donde nace tu hijo el sol
y en nombre de la luna flor del cielo y la noche su jardín
por los caminos de la energía
donde el ser humano jamás pierda raíz ni línea de
horizonte
y en el aire con las hojas sagradas del conocimiento
tus hijas predilectas lenitivas
convoco a las fuerzas de la naturaleza al espíritu de las
aguas y las nubes
a las plantas curativas a los animales sagrados
al espíritu de los humanos antiguos a los inocentes de
todos los tiempos
a los muertos bienamados
a los encarcelados por la libertad
a los que se elevan sobre el dolor
a los no nacidos aún Tierra Madre
al hombre pájaro que atraviesa todas las madrugadas
con su canto alado
que fructiferes sin daño ni veneno
y el enemigo duerma por siempre en su madriguera
Ninguna tierra tan pródiga como la tuya Madre Tierra
produces las savias más imprevistas
tú entiendes
lo que yo digo y escuchas mi latido en todas las horas
sólo te devuelvo lo que un día me diste
tú me esperas en la hora más extraña y más puntual
enamorada bondadosa Madre Tierra recibe esta ofrenda
