RESOUNDING HUACA is Manongo Mujica’s ambitious sound project to bring together a seven CD and two DVD production, in a unique packaging in the shape of a Huaca made out of fine wood. Part of what Mujica has produced in the last twenty years exploring sounds to invoke that ancestral and avantgarde is compiled here. Free improvisation, ritualism and exploration of jazz fusion.

Huaca means sacred thing. A Huaca is an object, a phenomenon, a place or being in which the force of that which is sacred has concentrated.
From his origins, man perceived whatever sacred in the landscape. Nothing is more evident in relationship with primitive religiousness than the cult to nature.
Relevant places were the target. Caves, oasis, dunes, mountain tops, islands, woods and forests, deserts, stones, swamps, mountains exacerbated the emotionality of individuals.
Terror, exaltation, lyricism, desolation, lucidity, mystery are sensations that were reflected on the landscape.

Instructions to learn to listen to it
1. Do not listen all the records one after the other
2. Close your eyes
3. Open your ears
4. Relax
5. Let yourself be permeated by the sound
6. Choose a record for a moment of the day or night
7. Preferably follow the sequence in which the records are presented

9. Let the mind fly away to discover “soundscapes”

Huaca quiere decir cosa sagrada. La huaca es un objeto, fenómeno , lugar o ser En la cual se han concentrado las fuerzas de lo sagrado.
Desde su origen, el hombre percibió lo sagrado en el paisaje. Nada resulta mas evidente respecto de la religiosidad primitiva que el culto a la naturaleza.
Su objetivo en lugares relevantes. Cuevas, oasis, dunas, cimas, islas, bosques, desiertos, piedras, pantanos, montañas, exacerbaron la emotividad del individuo.
Terror, exaltación, lirismo, desolación, lucidez, misterio, son sensaciones que se reflejaron en el paisaje.

Martin Joseph, pianist and composer, lived in Lima for 3 years. During this time I had the pleasure to know him and to play numerous times as a duet. Martin Joseph is a jazz musician whose aesthetics comes from what is known as Free Jazz, that is that he is a total improviser. Free Jazz is a current that arises in the United States in the early ‘60s as a way to part from Jazz orthodoxy.
Free Jazz is established to incur in an attitude which tries maybe a return to the feeling of collectiveness. The demand to listen actively turns the music fresh and natural.
Many say that this is music for musicians but it is also true that Free Jazz, especially in Europe, has more fans every day and there are international festivals which are dedicated to this genre.
The methodology which we used with Martin Joseph, if the term fits this language, was to agree solely in the duration of each piece, all the rest determined by chance. To be able to play with swing is what makes a jazz player different from other genres. Probably this is all that must no be lost. Martin’s music can be very deep and at the same time, maybe because he is a lover of Monk, it never lacks humor.
His knowledge of the history of jazz and of all of the aesthetic processes which the piano has been through as this adventure evolves is really noteworthy.
I still remember the first time I saw him in my life. Someone knock the door at my house in Chorrillos, I open the door and this character looks at me with great kindness and says: I am Martin Joseph, a free jazz professional pianist, are you the percussionist?

Martin Joseph pianista y compositor británico vivió en Lima durante 3 años. En ese periodo, tuve el placer de conocerlo y de tocar numerosas veces como dúo. Martin Joseph es un músico de Jazz de la estética conocida como Free-Jazz, es decir es un improvisador total. El Free-Jazz es una corriente que nace en los EEUU a inicio de los ’60 como una manera de romper la ortodoxia Jazzística.
El Free-Jazz se establece para incursionar en una actitud que intenta quizá un regreso al sentimiento de lo colectivo. La exigencia de un escuchar activo hace que la música se de, de manera fresca y natural.
Muchos dicen que esta es una música para músicos, pero también es cierto que el Free-Jazz sobre todo en Europa tiene cada vez mas adeptos y hay festivales internacionales que cultivan este genero.
La metodología que empleamos con Martin Joseph, si es que cabe tal termino dentro de este lenguaje, era el de ponernos de acuerdo solamente en la durabilidad del tiempo en cada pieza, todo lo demás lo determinaba el azar. El llegar a tocar con swing es lo que diferencia al jazzista de otros géneros. Acaso esto es lo único que no debe perderse. La música de Martin puede ser muy profunda y al
mismo tiempo, quizá porque es un amante de Monk, nunca adolece de humor.
Su conocimiento de la historia del Jazz y de todos los procesos estéticos por los que el piano a pasado a lo largo de esta aventura son verdaderamente notables.
Todavía recuerdo la primera vez que lo vi en mi vida. Alguien toco la puerta de mi casa en Chorrillos, abro la puerta y un personaje mirándome con mucha amabilidad me dice: Soy Martin Joseph, pianista profesional de free-jazz, es Ud. el percusionista?
